What is DEF?
How Diesel Exhaust Fluid works inside a Selective Catalytic Reduction system
DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines equipped with SCR technology, triggering a chemical reaction that converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. Understanding this process is essential for anyone operating modern Tier 4 diesel equipment — and for staying on the right side of EPA emissions regulations.

Bulk DEF vs. jugs: which makes more sense for your operation?
For most commercial fleet operators, bulk DEF delivery is significantly more cost-effective than purchasing individual jugs. Here's how to run the numbers for your operation.

DEF storage temperature: the complete operator's guide
DEF freezes at 12°F and begins to degrade above 86°F. Improper storage is one of the leading causes of SCR system damage and unexpected equipment downtime.

How to calculate your fleet's monthly DEF consumption
DEF consumption runs at roughly 2–5% of diesel usage depending on engine load. Use this formula to forecast your supply and eliminate costly emergency reorders.
Compliance
What is ISO 22241 and why does DEF quality matter?
ISO 22241 sets the international purity standard for DEF. Using off-spec or contaminated fluid can permanently damage your SCR system and void your equipment warranty.
Common Questions

DEF questions, answered

The most frequently asked questions about Diesel Exhaust Fluid — from how it works to storage, compliance, and delivery.

What exactly is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
DEF is a non-toxic solution made of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. It is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines to break down harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
What happens if my diesel engine runs out of DEF?
When DEF runs low, modern diesel engines enter "limp mode" — significantly reducing power output. If not refilled, the engine will eventually refuse to restart. This is an EPA-mandated fail-safe built into all SCR-equipped engines to ensure emissions compliance.
How much DEF does my fleet consume?
DEF consumption typically runs at 2–5% of diesel fuel usage depending on engine load and conditions. For every 50 gallons of diesel burned, expect to use approximately 1–2.5 gallons of DEF. Use our DEF calculator to get a precise estimate for your fleet.
How should DEF be stored on a job site?
Store DEF between 12°F and 86°F. It freezes at 12°F but thaws without losing effectiveness. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat above 86°F, which degrades urea concentration. Properly stored DEF has a shelf life of approximately 1–2 years.
Can I get bulk DEF delivered to my site?
Yes. Anytime Fuel Pros delivers bulk DEF nationwide directly to fleet yards, construction sites, and job locations. Same-day and next-day service available in most markets. All DEF meets ISO 22241 purity standards.
Is DEF the same as AdBlue?
Yes — AdBlue is the trademarked European name for the same fluid. Both are aqueous urea solutions meeting ISO 22241 standards. DEF is the term used in North America; AdBlue is used in Europe and Australia. They are chemically identical and fully interchangeable.

How much DEF does
your fleet actually need?

Most fleet operators underestimate their DEF consumption — leading to emergency orders, equipment downtime, and unnecessary cost. Enter your fleet's diesel usage and get an instant estimate of your monthly DEF requirements.

DEF consumption runs at approximately 2–5% of diesel fuel usage depending on engine load, equipment type, and operating conditions.
